Happy Mother´s Day - to us all!

I sent out Mother´s Day wishes to all the mammies I know.  See below in green.  The message received a lot of comment, so I thought, as I am wont to do,  that the world via my blog posting would like to see the message too.  See below.

To you and to all the mammies in the world today, I wish you a very happy Mother´s Day!

It is most in order today to acknowledge your contribution to the world.

And I am sure there are lots of daddies out there who would concur.

I know many mammies in the world today who should be acknowledged, won´t be.  So a pause for a moment for them too.

As my friend Oprah says,   .... well   sort of  friend Oprah .... OK  well not really a sort of friend... OK not really a friend.  BUT, I did once sit in the seat she used in the Oprah Winfrey Show in Chicago.  But I digress.

Which or whether Oprah and I agree on the fact that parenting well is the most demanding job in the world.

So well done Mammy, take a bow!

Now  go sit on the sofa, put your feet up, have a cup of tea and a nice big piece of cake/chocolate/ice cream or what ever and enjoy.    While enjoying same, smile and be proud.

I said NOW; the world can wait a minute or two  until your tea and cake/chocolate/ice cream or what ever are finished!

But then I send a variation on the them to non-mammy mammies.  This message brought even more comments.  See below. Again.

There I was sending my ´mother´s day´wishes to the mammies in my world.
And it occurred to me there are LOTS of us who are not mammies,  some because they are the wrong gender to be eligible in the first place, and others for lots of other reasons.  But even so,  for us there are beings either human, furry, feathered or other wise in our lives that need mothering -  Or should I be more specific and say ´parenting´.  OK maybe not for 20 odd years on the trot.  But none the less we have done some of the mothering duties in one way or another.
So I say:
Let us all  go sit on the sofa - not all together, that could be a bit cramped.  And there might be logistical issues here too!   Let us  put our feet up, have a cup of tea and a nice big piece of cake/chocolate/ice cream or what ever and enjoy.

For me, I am off to put the kettle on and check how out that tub of chocolate ice cream in the freezer!

Happy Day!

In spite of the various feedback I received,  I trust no one will feel put out if I copy in these lovely words of feedback from an ´Ex-Beau´.  He wrote...

I on  behalf of my mother, my wife and her mother, thank you! And even though some women haven't had the pleasure or displeasure of childbirth, there are some who have displayed great sacrifice and devotion in the spirit of motherhood. You are one of those people and to you I say; with total conviction: Happy Mother's Day Roe! Love ..

...From Mystery Ex-Beau..

And as his wife gets all these charming words coming at her daily.  Plus breakfast in bed everyday !! So you can imagine how harmonious their household is!

Another interesting comment came from an American.  She noted that I had used the southern U.S. old negro form of addressing a mother i.e.  mammy.   Irish mammies are called well mammies too.

Here´s an interesting fact in England and Ireland at least; the way one addresses ones  mother may, not always but may sometimes, tell a lot about the speaker´s station in life.

Ma going to Mammy going to Mum, Mummy and the really posh people say Mommy.  And in Ireland as a group Irish mammies are referred to as well.... Irish mammies!

A Walk, A Cycle, and Lots of Snow Flakes!

Last Monday the weather was beautiful.  It was also my birthday.  So Romeo H. and I went for a walk in the area to enjoy and celebrate.

See below pictures from our walk, where you can see the Bodensee, (Bodensee is the name of the section of Lake Konstanz near Allensbach) and environs looking very nice indeed.

And, from this blog writer´s persestive at least, some of ´ the views´ had legs on them.

That little tip of a building which you can see right in the centre of this picture is Schloss Freudental.  Which literally means ´joyful valley castle´
A beautiful name that truly befits this fine building.  Over the years the building had  fallen into disrepair.  Some years ago it was purchased by a Swiss man ´of means´ who put a lot of time, love AND money into renovating the castle.

And God bless him for it. Becasue, as you can see he did a great job too.  See more in the link below.
 https://www.schloss-freudental.de/hotel

So at the end of the week, I went for a cycle starting in a small town of Engen.  Below is the view I enjoyed with my pre-cycle sandwich.

Engen is not an unpleasant place to live.  As the little town is not on the lake, it is much quieter than if it was.

Truly one could say it has ´a view to die for´!   Which is a nice segway to the grave stone for a noble pair which I saw in the little church.

... So on with my cycle, which was truly ´tra la tra la´all the way; with only occasional cyclists or walkers passing, I more or less had the road, and the view to myself.

When I arrived on this little stretch of the road below, I just had to pause and be in awe for a moment...

Alas my attempts to take a set of photos of the view do not do it justice.  But do take note of this last photo in particular.  I will come back to it in a moment.

It was only after my tea and (second) pause that I noticed this sweet little statue of holy Mary in a little alcove beside the bench.  I felt she deserved inclusion!

And the sign on the right is also of interest; I passed a working farm, no bother there. But this poster explained that in the 1650´s roof tiles were produced in the same building.  I marvel at how much has survived here through the ages.

So cycled on beside the river Aach which flows into the Bodensee

... AND full marks to the local authorities around Singen who built and maintain these beautiful walk/cycle ways in this area.

Coming nearer to Radolfzell.  Can you see in the photo below several white dots in the field...

Storks!   Seven of them I saw.  All most likely with a nest and hopefully some stork Kücken, (chicks), and cygnets in the area nearby.

The Brutzeit or breeding season is amazing here.  The humans and birds though wild - the birds I mean,   have an understanding. YOU leave us alone and we will leave you alone.

An amazing example of that philosophy in action can been seen with this Schwanenpaar nesting on the lake AT THE LOCAL CAMPSITE.  Yes, the local campsite.  Can you credit that!

And a few more pictures near where the swans were nesting ... well just because the scenes were beautiful.

So, back to my cycle.

Coming  back to Allensbach, the area was experiencing  a Föhn.  That is a weather phenomenon that I won´t attempt to explain. But you can read more about Föhne here on wikipedia:   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foehn_wind

One characteristic of a Föhn is that the sky is very clear, there are few clouds and you can see for miles...

Look carefully on the picture on the right: There is a pale shadow on the horizon, you can see....

The Santis mountain, a part of the Alpine Mountain Range....

Thanks to the Föhn even with my little pocket camera I can zoom in and you can see the Santis as clear as daylight, and that even though the mountain range is well over 50 miles away!

So!  Although this blog was at first about pretty pictures in this pretty area, a perfectly good theme for a blog posting.  However, when I was compiling and sorting the photos to prepare the posting  I had a ´ goose pimple maximus´ moment.  `And why?` dear reader you ask in puzzlement... Well....

Walking and cycling in an area with a diameter of  about 40 kilometers - to those that haven´t yet converted -  that is 24.854848 Miles to you!   I witnessed three dramatic geological phenomena:

Glacial: The Bodensee
The Bodensee is a glacial lake created during which ever ice age, when the stenght and force of the ice alone pulled rocks from the earth carving out a lake 73 km long, as wide as 20 km and as deep as 350 meters in some places.

Volcanic:
Dead volcanoes - very dead, so no worries.  The viewer can see the evidence of the volcanic eruptions in the photos I took near Engen -  one photo plus up from holy Mary above.

The Alps:   As seen in the later photos, thanks to the Föhn.
As the wise and well read readership of this blog know; the area where the Alps are now situated  was once under the sea.

Back in the  Oigocene and Miocene epochs, the continent of Africa moved northwards, (VERY slowly.  Slower even than my bicyling!)  The African landmass crashed into and pushed against the the Eurasian tectonic plates.  Forcing the seabed in between upwards; And ta tah there you have the Alps!

Now for the one or two readers who may have missed the geography class on tectonic plates, you can go once again to the wonderful wikiepedia for a link on same.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geology_of_the_Alps

Now think about this for a moment.  All those geological phenomena in such close proximity to one another.  Add to that the other natural, if not so dramatic,  phenomena I past by on my walk and cycle: forests, rivers, and the wonder of the nesting birds.  - YEP putting this little blog posting together did indeed cause goose pimples maximus.

You know, thinking about the wonder of it all would make you want to make a big strong cup of tea.

´Oh yes, and what about the snow flakes mentioned in the title? ´ I hear you all cry:

Well on the Wednesday in between our walk on the Monday, and my cycle on the Saturday - we had SNOW.

Can you credit! Snow, in Allensbach in the last week of April.  When I came to this region in 2008,  we had   33 °C or 91.4 °F  which ever you prefer in April.

This week April 2017, I had to go and unpack my warm boots already put away for the winter. This at the end of April.  Can you credit that!

The Great St. Patrick´s Day Wellie Race up the Alps....

This weekend all roads lead to Guido and Ann Kretz´s Dairy farm in Moos for the great St. Patrick Day´s Wellie Race up the Alps.

...Yep, that´s right, a dairy farm in Moos! The townsland of Moos is not a Katzensprung,  as they say in these parts, from St. Gallen.  - (For you non-German speakers not a cat´s spring, or stone´s throw, from St. Gallen.)

This is the very farm where wellie racing in the Alps all began...

On Saturday, the day before the big race, preparations are already  underway...

Mary and Martina proudly fly the Swiss flag...

While mother Ann marks out the wellie race route below....

Now the very alert among you will note that well... there is ne´re a flake of snow on the ground... Yes dear wellie race aficionado no snow this year, not a flake to be seen on the race way, nor indeed within a mile of it!

But tell me that that view of the Sanits Mountain is not FABULOUS!

Last year you may recall we were dealing with temperatures of -5c and lower, this year the concern on wellie run day was.... sun burn.  Yep, big glasses and sp factor 20  sun cream  were the order of the day....

Lest anyone in Switzerland would feel left out, the flag from every canton (county) in Switzerland was hung out for the day that was in it.

Clare and Kilkenny Counties were well represented!

- I tell you, you would be so lucky to have such great weather for a county final as we had in Moos for the St. Patrick´s Day Wellie Race..

So the big clean up begins.  See below, the ´before´ shot....

And when the bionic Kretz woman get to work you can see the results in the ´after´shots below....

But it did not end at a major over haul in the garage.

There was going to be hungry wellie racers and their groupies to  be feed....

And let me tell you that was no slap dash affair, as you can see from the menu Mary wrote up.

There was soups and desserts and sausages.  Most notably there were cakes celebrating Irish and Swiss pride.....

Definitely time for a well earned siesta after all that hard work......

Oh oh.... there are two slices of cake missing... Well let me tell you, no one here knows anything about anything... (But I would not go looking for crumbs under the bunk bed just the same... )

Before the big crowd arrived Mary´s teacher and family turned up.  They did a good turn for the Walls of Limerick which, fair dues they took took quite fast...

Le Big Day.  Finally.  We are all set for:
The Great St. Patrick´s Day Wellie Race up the Alps.

(albeit sans snow!)

Now the wellie races in Kilkenny and Canada may win on numbers and what have you.  But let me tell you,  for our not-so-big wellie race in the Alps, I bet you we win hands down on global participation; in the five years we are up and wellieing in the Alps, we have had in past years participants born in Austria, Bangladesh, Canada, China, Clare, Italy and Kilkenny.  This year we were no less international; as well as the usual suspects we also had participants from Kenya and Malta.  Oh and did I say Switzerland!

This fellah may call his wellies ´super speed´ but  time will tell if that is all talk or if indeed his ´speed´is super!

The racers were off so quickly, we could not get a starting line photo...

But we do know Italy´s wellie representative came in first for the boys under 10

The first girls home were so quick we could n´t keep up to get a clear photo of them.  But we know the Kretz daughters came in nos. 1 and 2..... (I bet you it has something to do with  that extra energy that came from two missing pieces of cake.  BUT nobody knows anything about any thing.)
It was neck and neck to the finishing line in the women´s event, with Malta and Switzerland both being represented proudly.  (The first place winner in no where to be seen - she´s already home!)

And the women are off!

The men´s finish was not so close.

And fair dues Mr. Super Speed himself came in first. Followed by Super Speed Jr.  The pair have been wellie running for a few years now and it is clear to see the gap between father and son gets closer and closer... We anticipate that Super Speed Jr. will over take Super Speed Sr. in the next year or two....

I am not sure what the cows on the farm made of the wellie race; but Petra and her co-cows appear be rather bemused with the whole business.

Prize Giving
Another highlight of the day was the prize giving... NOT least because we managed to get Guido Kretz into the photo.

The family Kretz is seen presenting prizes to our youngest winners.  The under five group who represented Italy, Malta and Switzerland.

The Swiss Mädel (young girl) at 2 was our youngest participant this year.

And for the junior girls... The winners were the Kretz sisters and Johanna from Malta.

Malta on the podium again.  - It must be something in the sea air around that island that makes them all so good at Alpine wellie racing!

Switzerland was well represented on the podium for the ladies race.  And yes - Malta ... again!
But I tell you something:  women Alpine wellie racers make a fine cut of it... Tell me that´s not a fine trio of woman below.

Now one year of fine woman could be a coincidence, but look at the small picture on the left. These are the winners in the women´s section last year... Are n´t they women no one would be afraid to bring home to the future in-laws.

Ah,  but in fairness Mr. Super Speed did in fact win in the men´s section and his co-winners don´t look so miserable either this year, now that we have to admit, as you can see above.

`And there is one for everyone in the audience!`   No, Oprah is not giving out a car this time, but everyone who turned up to race, got a unique one-of-a-kind totally awesome  badge.....

Heck we were so magnanimous... even people who did not run got a badge... How lucky were they!

We´ve all been there...   Oh yes EVERY wellie wearer, racer or not has been there....

There are time you just can´t manage it alone....

Sometimes it takes, well if not quite a village,...a few at least villagers to help get the wellies off.....

Le Big Feed....

Then there was a great feast laid out for us all to enjoy... ( The photographer was so busy enjoying the good food, that she was ahem  ´unavailable´ to take too many photographs of people enjoying the good food!)

The sharing of gifts.

Ann
In the townsland of Moos and around the boreens of Clare it is a well known fact that Ann Kretz Boggy likes her cup of tea.  And further that last year she got a very decent cut of a teapot in Wicklow when she was there with her sister.  The former of which she is very pleased and proud.  And quite justifiably so.   So it was felt very much in order to present Ann with a decent cut of a tea cosy to keep said decent cut of a tea pot warm.

Guido received a gift with a different story altogehter.
But Guido´s gift will need some explaining to people not living in these parts.  So get the kettle on, and Ann you can get out that teapot from Wicklow....

In school we all learned that they spoke three languages in Switzerland: German, French and Italian.  THAT dear reader is  only the beginning.    First Switzerland has its own unique language: Rätoromanish.

In addition within each language group there are dialects and differences.  For example in Swiss German also known as Alemannic German you have not only Schweizterdeutch but Schwyzerdütsch, Schwiizertüütsch, Schwizertitsch,  AND other dialects.

The other three languages, French, Italian and Rätoromanish all have their own variations too, of which, I must hasten to clarify, the native speaker is VERY proud.  And any foreigner, wellie racer or not, would do well not to jest over this abundance of linguistical variation.

 - Indeed so different is Schweizterdeutch from standard German,  that German T.V. uses sub-titles when Swiss people are speaking on the telly... And we here are only five miles away from there!

If you want to get an introduction to all these variations on Swiss German a good place to start is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_German

So back to Guido´s gift... Well as I said Guido prefers to speak Schweizterdeutch.  BUT I know he speaks English too, I´ve caught him at it.  And  - I mean how could he not when he lives in a house with three females with roots in Clare.

None the less we thought Guido might enjoy a further linguistic challange - a little something he could contemplate when waiting for the cows to finish their milking cycle at 5:00 of a winters morning perhaps  -   Schwäbisch Deutsch.

Now Schwäbisch Deutsch is a variation of German spoken a  2 1/2 hour drive away from Moss in the region around Stuttgart in Germany.

Not to make it too difficult for Quido so early in the winter mornings, he received only a very small dictionary: just a little introduction to  Schwäbisch Deutsch.

Now the Kretz cows have it good indeed, as you can see here.  But now they will also enjoy the dulcet tones of Guido practicing his Schwäbisch Deutsch in the privacy of the milking parlour.

More presents!
First for Mary who had a birthday the week before the Wellie Race...

Ann on behalf of the Kretz family presented me with a candle from the local area. But it had the Irish colours.  -  I only came enjoyed the view, ran in my wellies, and ate the good Ann, Mary and Martina prepared, so I don´t know why I had reason to get a gift at all, but there you are, and thank you Ann!

A local journalist,  Andrea Heimbeck, who is a great supporter of the The Great St. Patrick´s Day Wellie Race up the Alps - and participant too might I add, also received a gift in appreciation for spreading the word on the race in the local papers.

Good food, good fun, wellie racing and sun shine... But, unlike Cinderella who had until midnight, we had to wind down at 5:00 p.m. for the milking and feeding.

And perhaps a little cat cuddling...

Talk about a chip off the block... Martina without a pip out of her, donned her wellies and woolly hat and went to feed the cows along side her Daddy.  And this after a weekend of cleaning, baking, and wellie racing.   I was very impressed with this -  but clearly one local resident just kept on snoozing!...

This is Petra again on the left.  Petra is  world famous in Moos, in 2015 she received a certificate for having given 100,000 liters of milk... jep.. all those 0´s are correct, and now it is over 115,000 and counting...

All that for The Great St. Patrick´s Day Wellie Race up the Alps....

Plus....

.... A view to die for!.

Guido, Ann, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for inviting us to wellie race on your farm.

Your hospitality is gracious.  And appreciated.

Follow up: Reporting in Swiss papars on the Wellie race...

The Clare Champion Ann´s home county wrote up this witty  on the wellie race entitled: Sunglasses in the frame for Alps wellie race.
